NEWBURGH, Ind. — A longtime staple of downtown Newburgh is preparing for major changes as its owner steps back from the business after more than two decades. Mulberry Jeans Accents, known for its boutique gifts, teas, and cozy atmosphere, will undergo a significant downsizing and temporary closure this summer.
Owner Gina McCalister, who opened the shop 24 years ago, announced she is reducing her workload to reclaim personal time after years of operating the store nearly seven days a week. McCalister said she has routinely worked 70 hours or more each week, leaving little room for her passions outside the shop, including wildlife photography and kayaking.
“I love this community and I love this store, but it’s time to slow down,” McCalister said in her announcement.
As part of the transition, Mulberry Jeans will reduce inventory, close temporarily for several weeks, and undergo a summer remodel that will shrink the store’s footprint. The renovation includes new interior walls and a restructured layout. Once complete, McCalister plans to lease part of the building to another business.
Despite the downsizing, several customer favorites will remain. The boutique will continue offering its popular coffees, teas, and curated gift items, though in a more streamlined space.
The store has also updated its hours, now closing on Sundays and Mondays, with the possibility of further reductions as the transition continues.
Before the remodel begins, Mulberry Jeans is holding a major inventory reduction sale, giving longtime customers a chance to shop before the temporary closure.
Mulberry Jeans Accents has been a fixture in Newburgh’s historic district for nearly a quarter‑century, and McCalister says the changes are meant to ensure the shop can continue operating sustainably — just at a pace that allows her to enjoy life beyond the counter.
