Denver, Colorado — May 10, 2026 — A Frontier Airlines jet preparing for takeoff at Denver International Airport struck and killed a trespasser who had breached airport security late Friday night, prompting a brief engine fire, smoke in the cabin, and the emergency evacuation of all 231 people on board.
The incident occurred at 11:19 p.m. on Runway 17L as Frontier Airlines Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles, accelerated for departure with 224 passengers and 7 crew members.
Security Breach and Impact
Airport officials say the individual scaled a perimeter fence just minutes before the collision and ran directly onto the active runway. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the breach was intentional:
“A trespasser breached airport security at Denver International Airport, deliberately scaled a perimeter fence, and ran out onto a runway. The trespasser was then struck by Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 during takeoff at high speed.”
The impact caused significant damage to the aircraft, including an engine malfunction that triggered a brief fire. Fire crews extinguished the flames within minutes.
Smoke in Cabin and Emergency Evacuation
Smoke entered the cabin immediately after the impact, leading the pilots to abort the takeoff and order an emergency evacuation using inflatable slides.
All passengers and crew exited the aircraft safely. Officials reported 12 minor injuries, with five people transported to hospitals for evaluation.
Passenger Accounts
Several passengers described a chaotic and frightening scene. One traveler told 9NEWS the aircraft was “speeding down the runway” when they felt a heavy jolt followed by the smell of smoke.
Others reported seeing flames near the wing and hearing flight attendants issue urgent evacuation commands as smoke filled parts of the cabin.
Air traffic control audio captured the pilots’ immediate distress call: “We just hit somebody.”
Runway Closure and Investigation
Denver International Airport confirmed the trespasser was not an airport employee. Their identity has not yet been released.
Runway 17L remained closed overnight for investigation and reopened before 11 a.m. Saturday. Most passengers were rebooked on later flights.
Frontier Airlines issued a statement expressing condolences and confirming full cooperation with authorities:
“Passengers and crew safely evacuated the aircraft via slides. We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and are cooperating fully with authorities.”
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation focusing on:
- The security breach
- Perimeter fencing protocols
- Aircraft response and emergency procedures
Broader Context
While runway incursions have increased nationwide, fatal incidents involving trespassers remain extremely rare. Airport officials say perimeter security measures are now under immediate review.
As of Saturday evening, Denver International Airport reported normal operations, though some flights experienced minor delays due to the overnight closure.
Frontier Airlines and DEN officials say counseling services are being offered to passengers and crew affected by the incident.
Further updates will be released as the investigation continues
